American tenor John Osborn gained international acclaim as a winner of the 1994 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions at the age of twenty-one and as the First Place winner of the Operalia Concours International des Voix d’Opera Placido Domingo in Bordeaux in 1996. Since then, he has been engaged to sing with leading theaters around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Berlin State Opera, and L’Opéra National de Paris.
Mr. Osborn’s 2006-2007 season opened at The Netherlands Opera with performances of the Italian Singer in Richard Strauss’s Capriccio. His season continued at San Francisco Opera where he made his debut singing Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia. He returned to L’Opéra National de Paris in the role of Léopold in a new production of La Juive directed by Pierre Audi and under the baton of Daniel Oren, and immediately followed with his debut at Teatro San Carlo in Lisbon singing Lindoro in L’italiana in Algeri. He ended the season with his return to Opera Theater of St. Louis to sing Riccardo in The Puritans.
Of his many roles, Mr. Osborn is especially recognized for his portrayals of Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola, Tonio in La Fille du Régiment, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore and Conte d’Almaviva. He first sang Don Ramiro at L’Opéra de Montréal, and has since sung the role at Semperoper Dresden, Teatro Regio di Torino, Genoa’s Teatro Carlo Felice, Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile, and it was his debut role with L’Opéra National de Paris at Palais Garnier. He has performed Tonio with Opera Pacific, Arizona Opera, and Grand Theatre de Bordeaux, and recently at Florida Grand Opera in which The Miami Herald praised him for his “thrilling singing” and his “vibrant, robust exuberance.” Mr. Osborn brings that same energy to Almaviva, a role he debuted with Vancouver Opera and has also sung at the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Vienna State Opera, Berlin State Opera, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Teatro Municipal in Santiago, and on tour in Japan and China with Seiji Ozawa. Mr. Osborn’s portrayal of Nemorino has won him great critical acclaim. Opera News says “Osborn sang an exquisite Nemorino. His nuanced acting was a joy from beginning to end, and his “Una furtiva lagrima” was enthralling.” After his debut as Nemorino with The Washington Opera at the age of 25, he was proclaimed as “possibly one of the great Nemorinos of our day”. He has reprised the role with the Vancouver Opera, The Cleveland Opera, Connecticut Opera, and the Theatre du Capitole in Toulouse.
Mr. Osborn is also in demand for a wide range of roles that span from Rossini and Mozart to Verdi and Strauss. He has sung Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail with Atlanta Opera, Washington National Opera, Orlando Opera, and in Bordeaux; Tamino in Die Zauberflöte in Seattle, San Diego, Baltimore, and at New York City Opera; Ferrando in Così fan tutte at Boston Lyric Opera and San Diego Opera; Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni at the Metropolitan Opera with James Levine, Renee Fleming, Bryn Terfel, and Ferruccio Furlanetto, at Portland Opera and Florida Grand Opera with Stewart Robertson, and New York City Opera with Steven White. His additional Rossini performances have included Lindoro in L’italiana in Algeri for Opera Santa Barbara with Valery Ryvkin, and Il Conte di Libenskof in Il viaggio a Reims at Portland Opera with Christopher Larkin. He has sung Alfred in Die Fledermaus with Lotfi Mansouri directing at the San Diego Opera, and David Kneuss directing at Boston Lyric Opera; Azor in Gretry’s Zemire et Azor with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis; Rinuccio in James Robinson’s production of Gianni Schicchi in Il Trittico at New York City Opera with George Manahan. Recently, he sang his first Duca di Mantua in Rigoletto which Opera News claims “was a huge crowd-pleaser, executed with vibrant tone and ping on high” at the Des Moines Metro Opera under Robert Larsen’s conducting and stage direction.
Mr. Osborn has also had success on the concert stage with performances of Messiah with the Richmond Symphony, Michel in Elizabeth by Donizetti and Elvino in La Sonnambula by Bellini with William Crutchfield and the Bel Canto at Caramoor Festival, Belmonte in a concert of Die Entführung aus dem Serail with Yoel Levy and the Atlanta Symphony, Rossini’s Stabat Mater with Semyon Bychkov and the Westdeutscher Rundfunk Radio Symphony Orchestra, which was performed live and recorded for television broadcast at the Philharmonie in Köln, and he has made numerous appearances as Tenor Soloist in Carmina Burana with San Francisco, Seattle, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and Kansas City Symphonies.
Mr. Osborn made his European debut in 1997 as Fenton in Falstaff with the Oper der Stadt Köln, directed by Robert Carsen and conducted by James Conlon. Other international credits include his debut with The Netherlands Opera in September 2003 singing Iopas in a new Pierre Audi production of Les Troyens, conducted by Edo deWaart. He has sung Don Narciso in Il turco in Italia at the Teatro San Carlo di Napoli and with L’Opéra de Monte-Carlo, and he made his debut with Ongaku-Juku Opera Project Japan in 2001 singing Ferrando under the baton of Seiji Ozawa.
Mr. Osborn made his professional operatic debut in 1993 at Des Moines Metro Opera as First Guest in Menotti’s The Saint of Bleeker Street and returned in 1994 as Leo Hubbard in Marc Blitzstein’s Regina. He joined the Metropolitan Opera Young Artist Development Program in autumn of that year. He was an apprentice artist with Glimmerglass Opera in summer 1995, where he sang Slim in Benjamin Britten’s rarely performed Paul Bunyan. He made his official Metropolitan Opera debut in April of 1996 as Vierte Jüde in Salome under the baton of Donald Runnicles, Catherine Malfitano in the title role and Bernd Weikl as Jochanaan. He sang two roles in the North American premiere of Janacek’s The Excursions of Mr. Broucek at the Spoleto Festival USA that same year, and he sang Count Libenskof with Wolf Trap Opera. At the Metropolitan Opera, he also sang the roles of Sergio in Fedora and Maintop in Billy Budd which was also video taped, Radio Broadcast live, and later televised on Public Television. John Osborn is a native of Sioux City, Iowa. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Simpson College. He is the recipient of the 1994 Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation, a 1995 winner of an Opera Index Award, and a 1997 graduate of the Metropolitan Opera Young Artists Development Program.

Me and my Family

I am married to Lynette Tapia, a wonderful, well-merited soprano, who is also my business partner, and with whom I’ve collaborated many times We have one child who is named Ana Lynette. She was born on November 2, 2000.
I began my music studies in college, but I was very active in music and eventually in musical theater throughout my high school years. I was selected several times as a soloist, and I enjoyed very much singing as cantor at church, as well as weddings and funerals.
My first operatic experience was the first opera I ever did in college. I was in the chorus of Susanna by Carlisle Floyd. I enjoyed the experience so much that I knew I needed to learn as much about performing as possible. It became my life passion.
I continue to stay in touch with Robert Larsen, my mentor from Simpson College, and I literally sing all over the world as a guest artist in leading opera houses as well as several regional companies. I truly love the opportunities I’ve been given to share my God-given talents with as many people around the world as possible.
Mother and Father are Michael and Margery Osborn of Merrill, IA.
I grew up in Sioux City, IA in a suburb called Leeds. I have four brothers and a sister.
Michael lives in Boca Raton, FL with his wife Stacey.
Michelle lives in Raytown, MO with her cat, Emma.
Doug lives in Oviedo, FL with his wife Jami and their two sons, Aaron and Daniel (Daniel Christian was born Oct. 17th).
Jason lives in Woodstock, IL with his wife Nicole and their son, Jason James Jr. and their newborn baby girl, Mae Darlene!
Anthony lives in Sioux City, IA with his wife Ellen. They have a baby boy named Ryan Anthony Osborn.
I now live in Laguna Niguel, CA with my wife and daughter. We have a maltese puppy named Tinkerbell. We live on the same street as Lynette’s parents, Sam and Melvy Tapia.
